Workshop Summary: Flyways are like highways in the sky—routes that large numbers of birds follow during migration. In North America, mountain ranges, coastlines, and the Mississippi River all run mostly north to south. These natural features form four major flyways that migrating birds use as guides.

Using reference guides and citizen science apps, participants will be asked to observe, listen to, track, and identify a bird and a fun fact about it in the surrounding area. Once they’ve properly identified the bird, they will work with lead artist Jessica Turtle to create a watercolor likeness of their bird as part of a large-scale community collage representing the Mississippi Flyway—North America’s largest migratory route.

Partner: Dubuque Rendezvous! a cooler world gathering is a month-long exhibition of outdoor sculpture installations and a four-day festival featuring performance projects, pop-up events, exhibitions, presentations, and forums. Programming emphasizes environmental awareness, cultural communication, climate sustainability and collaborative inspiration. Participation is being sought locally, nationally and across the Mississippi River watershed. Projects emphasize communication across communities and support diverse representation including non-traditional artists and youth. Opportunities for public participation include interactive projects, social gatherings, public forums and an open-wall exhibition. All events are free and open to the public.
