St. Croix River Paddle Out
Sunday, July 26th and September 20th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
A "Paddle Out," also called a grief paddle, is a ritual in which participants gather to form a circle on the river, place flowers in the water, and splash water in honor of a lost loved one or to address societal grief collectively. This tradition is a modern adaptation of an age-old custom among mourners, offering a communal space for healing, remembrance, and the processing of difficult emotions.
If you need a place to sit with your grief, even briefly and in the company of others, this experience is for you. Here, everyone is welcome, no matter what grief they carry.

Join us for a scenic paddle along the St. Croix River, where you'll spend the day immersed in art, relaxation, and nature. Enjoy slow observation, gentle sun, and creative activities like sketching mushrooms or painting river turtles, guided by local artists.

Plant Paddles! Intro to Botanical Illustration and Plant Identification
Explore the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway while learning to identify and sketch fascinating plants as you paddle!
Paddle 1: Sunday, May 24th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
Paddle 2: Saturday, June 27th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
Paddle 3: Saturday, August 22nd from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
This series of paddles is designed to introduce the basics of drawing and illustration, while also identifying native plants of the St. Croix River Valley while paddling the river. Each paddle is designed to build off of previous sessions, but it is not necessary to attend each paddle. The series introduces people to the basics of illustration, observational drawing, composition and plant identification. Whether you are experienced with drawing, or just getting started, each paddle is designed to accommodate all comfort levels. Drawing style and approach will focus on the history and contemporary approaches of botanical illustrations, providing guidance, insight and inspiration as a foundation for continued practice.

Songwriting for Community Singing
Friday July 10th - Sunday July 12th
“What the world needs now is love… and singing!” Immersed in water and woods, this gathering offers a space to let your creative songwriting and song-leading loose in a safe, guided setting. Each songwriting session includes tips, prompts, and relaxed space to write your own lyrics and music while paddling down the St. Croix River or wandering the woods. Together we’ll explore writing zipper songs, rounds, chants, call and response, and layered harmonies that are simple and effective for collective group singing.

Join Jessica Turtle’s Introduction to Field Notes workshop to experience rolling hills, shimmering lakes, and the welcoming charm of small-town life—all while immersing yourself in creative outdoor exploration. This workshop is an ideal way to recharge, learn new skills, and experience the very best of Michigan’s natural beauty.
This workshop is rooted in the Field Study tradition and encourages you to be curious and dedicate time to building a library of inspiration. It serves as a platform for grounding yourself in the moment, documenting your surroundings, and engaging in play and experimentation.
