Field Notes: St. Croix River Ecology

  • Treehaus Studio 1017 N Cascade Street Osceola United States (map)

Experience the beauty of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway on a unique field study canoe trip! Paddle through pristine waters as you observe and document the vibrant ecosystems that make this riverway special.

Throughout the trip, participants dedicate time to careful observation and documentation of the region’s rich flora and fauna. Guided by naturalists, they record sightings of bald eagles, otters, herons, freshwater mussels, beavers, and a variety of native fish and plant species, using field journals, photography, and data sheets to capture their findings. Stops along the way allow for close study of aquatic habitats, with fun activities such as snorkeling and mushroom hunting deepening understanding of ecological relationships.

This trip emphasizes direct experience—listening to the songbirds, feeling the current beneath the canoe, and reflecting on the natural beauty and the importance of preserving wild places. This field study fosters a sense of stewardship and a deeper appreciation for the fragile ecosystems that support the St. Croix Riverway.
